10. Ruth J. Roark

obituary for Ruth ROARK HOWELL  from the Guthrie County Iowa Vedette Newspaper located at Panora Iowa.

Ruth Roark Howell, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ruel Roark, was born on July 31, 1849 near Richmond, Virginia.  She left there with her parents when she was three years old.  They took their
belongings and a covered wagon by boat to Cincinnati, Ohio, and then traveleed by covered wagon to Dexter, (Iowa) arriving there in 1863 (about the second year of the Civil war).  They
crossed the Mississippi at Burlington on a flatboat.  Des Moines when she saw it was just an old fort,   Indinas were numerous in this part of the country at that time.
On March 24, 1869 she was united in marriage to Jason Howell,  the next year they moved to Missouri where they lived for 25 years.  Two children , Sylvester and Ella, came to bless their
home.  Both have preceded their mother in death.
In 1906, Mr and Mrs Howell moved back to Iowa setlling at Valley Junction, where they stayed till 1919.  In that year they moved to Panora where her husband passed away in December
1921.  Mrs Howell continued to live at this home and near Panora until death.   She united with the Church of the Brethren at Panora on October 1, 1869.  Survived by seven
grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, a son-in-law, Andrew Terpatra of Des Moines and a daughter-in-law, Mrs Laura Howell of Adel, Iowa.
Services for Mrs Howell were held Friday at Brethren Church with the Rev. Earl Deardorff in charge.  Interment was made in the cemetery nearby.

Jason Howell

15 Dec 1921  newspaper on death of Jason Howell, states that he was born near Hagerstown, Indiana on March 20, 1848 and died in Panora Dec 8th, 1921 at age of 73yrs 8ms and 18ds.
Married March 24, 1869 in Dallas county to Ruth Roark.  Moved to Missouri, etc.   two children, S.J. Howell of Linden and Ella Terpstra of Valley Junction,  one brother, N.H. Howell of
Panora and a sister, Mrs Catherine Shook also of Panora besides seven grandchildren and four great grand children.
