100. Robert Arden York

Arden died at his home with his family present.  Cause of death was Cancer.
ARDEN YORK, Kansas
R. Arden York, 75, of McPherson, Kan., died Sept. 25, 1997 at his home from complications of cancer. Funeral services were Sept. 29 at Haviland Friends Church with Pastor Lester Snyder and Dallas Evans officiating. Burial followed at the Haviland Cemetery.
He was born May 28, 1922 in Valley Junction. He graduated from Valley High School in 1939, and farmed with his father in Iowa. On April 16, 1950, he married Nadine Camp in Earlham. He continued his agriculture career as a herdsman and ranch manager of cattle operations throught the Midwest. He spent the last several years of his career in fertilizer management before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Haviland Friends Church.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Surving relatives include his wife; one son, R. Glenn York of Ft. Collins, Colo.; one daughter, Elaine McAllister of McPherson, Kan.; two sisters, Helen Piper of West Des Moines, Carolyn Moore of Earlham; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.


101. Marjorie Ann York

Marjorie Ann Slavens, 71, of Cumming died June 13, 1996 from complications of diabetes at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Graveside services were June 17 at Penn Center Cemetery in rural Earlham.
The daughter of Carl and Bertha Ratcliff York, she was born Sept. 6, 1924 in West Des Moines. The family moved to a farm north of Earlham and she graduated from Earlham High School.
On Jan. 15, 1948 she married John Slavens at the family farm.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Slavens worked as a field case worker for Warren County Home Health Care. She was active with the Community Church in Cumming and was a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the ladies missionary group.
Mrs. Slavens is survived by her husband, John, of Cumming; daughter Jeri Brown of Urbandale and son Tim Slavens of Johnson Creek, Wis. She is also survived by sisters Helen Piper of West Des Moines and Carolyn Moore of Earlham, a brother Arden York of McPherson, Kan., as well as four grandchildren.


John Fowler Slavens

John Fowler Slavens, 82, died Feb. 3 in Cumming.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Cumming Community Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Benton officiating. Interment took place at Penn Center in rural Earlham.
John Fowler Slavens was born May 26, 1915, in Waukee to Guy Way and Sadie Florence (Porter) Slavens. He was a graduate of Earlham High School and a World War II veteran. On Jan. 15, 1948, he married Marjorie A. York. He was employed as a kiln operator by Penn Dixie Cement Co. of West Des Moines. He was a 50-year member of the Madison Lodge No. 568 A.F. & A.M. He was also an avid outdoors man and hunter, as well as a nature enthusiast.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
He is survived by a daughter, Jeri Brown of Urbandale; a son, Tim Slavens of Johnson Creek, Wis.; a brother, Dr. J. Phillip Slavens of North Sioux City, Neb.; and four grandchildren.
