Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
A visitation will be held prior to services from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., Thursday morning.
Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the family in loving memory of Wilma.
Wilma Elsie Travis was born June 17, 1911 in Madison County, Walnut Township near Peru; the daughter of Martin B. and Nellie (Hoover) Travis, one of six children. Her marriage to Harold “Jack” Carter took place on June 22, 1929 in Creston, Iowa. They were married 63 years, prior to his death in 1992.
Wilma was a homemaker and farmwife. She and her husband faithfully served the Lord since 1952 at the Grace Baptist Church in Winterset, where she served as a 4th grade Sunday school teacher for many years. She enjoyed cooking and could play the piano by ear.
Wilma passed into the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, August 8, 2011 at the Country Haven Guest Home in Scott Township, Madison County, Iowa. She was 100.
Wilma is survived by her children, Howard (Evelyn) Carter of Winterset; Kathy (Rev. John) Spradlin of Arkansas City, KS; 3 grandchildren, Christi Carter of Costa Mesa, CA; John (Merav) Spradlin, Jr. of Overland Park, KS, Aaron (ShiAnn) Spradlin of Chanute, KS; 6 great-grandchildren, Sarah Black and Travis Carter; Kelley Ann Reaper; Ethan Uzi and Jude Zevi Spradlin and Shayla Brown and 6 great great-grandchildren; Dalton, Dylan and Dustin Black; Skylar Carter; Carter Michael and Hunter Michael Reaper. She is also survived by a granddaughter-in-law, Connie Carter and a grandson-in-law, Gary Dickel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; a son, Richard Carter, a grandson Gregory Carter; a granddaughter, Pamela Dickel. Wilma was also preceded in death by her siblings, Joseph Travis, Edith Camp, Maude Simmons, Rev. Earl Travis and Wendell Travis.
